After all, “It’s not whether you win or lose, it’s how you play the game”! Let’s eliminate the scoreboard.
Let’s give ALL the participants, Ram or Patriot, who were at the Super Bowl their participation trophy.
And no one would care.
No one would watch.
No one would pay.
Few would play.
I visited a factory recently where there were no visual systems showing what the expectations were for the day. No definition of Success. No scoreboard for the team on the field to know whether they won or lost today. No stats collected to point them in the direction of where they might improve next time.
But hey, at the end of the week they will get their paycheck, their ‘participation trophy’ for being there and going through the motions.
Not how to build a business that is continuously improving. Not how to build a business where the employees are meaningfully engaged in their work. Not an environment of success.
Yes, you really do need to keep score!
People want to be successful. They want to know the definition of success. So if you do not already have a scoreboard for every operation that directly links to the business’ scoreboard, get busy creating it today.
